Outdoor News & Tips: Two local state parks and nine state parks in the Bay Area would be closed under the new budget proposed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Statewide, the governor has proposed closing 48 of the state’s 278 state parks.
Locally, Ford Ord Dunes State Park, and Fremont Peak State Historic Park are slated for closure. Also, New Brighton State Beach, Seacliff State Beach, Manresa State Beach, Natural Bridges State Beach, and Sunset State Beach would do without lifeguards.
For more info go to santacruzsentinel.com and sfgate.com. For a map of all the parks picked for closure, go to links.sfgate.com/ZCAR.

Bishop was No. 1 on most ballots and in the top 10 of most outdoor writers taking part in a survey. They highlighted trout fishing at lakes and streams, great hiking, horseback riding and exploring near Bishop Pass, backpacking into the John Muir Wilderness, tracking Sierra bighorn sheep and mule deer, and four-season mountain weather, complete with sensational fall colors from aspens, yet without much snow. More info at sfgate.com/sports/outdoors. (Bishop was also picked as one of the 31 Best Places to Live by National Geographic Adventure Magazine, along with Pismo Beach, in September, 2006.)

Berry Creek Falls, Terrace Look at Wilder Ranch, and the Elkhorn Slough made Tom Stienstra’s Top Ten best ways to bring in spring. More info at sfgate.com/sports/outdoors

The Weekend Sherpa suggests you can get 360-degree views of the bay and a blooming kaleidoscope of colors all from San Mateo County’s San Bruno Mountain, between the 101 and 280 freeways. Take the Summit Loop Trail and follow scattered ribbons of California golden poppies. Lupines, goldfields, Johnny jump-ups, and Douglas iris also color the landscape. Find more info at WeekendSherpa.com

Here are four Bay Area hikes from the San Jose Mercury News that are perfect for spring:

Hike For Discovery is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s new adventure fundraising program that prepares people, from beginners to seasoned hikers, to experience a natural wonder in a special way. As you train, you’ll raise funds to help The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) cure blood cancers. For more info go to HikeForDiscovery.org
