Water filters are an important part of protecting your health when hiking, biking, walking and camping when you need to supplement your water supply. Depending on where you get your water, you are going to need different levels of protection. Purifiers are the most thorough form of filtering water. They are categorized by:
- Purifiers eliminate all microorganisms. This includes viruses, bacteria and protozoa. Some examples of these are Hepatitis A, Polio, E Coli, salmonella, Giardia and Cryptospordium.
- Microfilters eliminate most microorganisms. Microfilters cannot reliably remove viruses. This filter is primarily effective when you are sure that there has been no human activity upstream from your water supply.
- Water Tablets
- Water tablets have a similar function to microfilters. However it is only effective in removing Protozoa which includes Giardia.
